Machines do lots of useful work to save us time and effort. They cut, punch, roll, drill, grind, assemble, handle, and transport - but they can't think! Only the human operator – you – can make them do their jobs properly and safely.
Cleaning jammed equipment, reaching for a wrench, or retrieving a dropped glove are common tasks. Yet, each of these acts can lead to a serious injury. Many injuries occur during equipment maintenance. Sometimes workers try to reach past the guards while trying to service equipment or get caught in power transmissions such as belts, pulleys, running rolls, chains or sprockets.
Employees often are injured or killed by moving parts that are not recognized as hazards or dangers; or by moving parts you might assume no one would put any part of their body into.
